How To Recalculate Any Recipe To Match The Amount Of Ingredients You Have

You feel like making something different. You look on line for a recipe and you are all excited! You are in luck because all the ingredients for the recipe you have in your kitchen. But wait! The recipe calls for three cups of milk but your teenage son used 3/4 cup to make his smoothie! What to do? Run out to the store to get more milk? Nope. Just convert the recipe.

What Do You Mean Convert A Recipe?

So you only have 2 1/4 cups of milk and the recipe call for 3 cups. All you need to do is convert the recipe so the rest of the ingredients match the amount of milk you really have. If you have less milk than the recipe calls for, you reduce the rest of ingredients by the ratio of milk you have now.

Just Remember, New Over Old

This is the simple formula for converting a recipe. Simply remember New over old, N/O which simply means you divide the new amount by the old amount.

New= 2 1/4 or 2.25

Old= 3

N/O = 2.25/3 = 0.75

So now you take that result and multiply every other ingredient by 0.75

If the recipe called for 1 cup of flour, then your new amount will be 1cup x 0.75 = 3/4 cup. Simple right?

This N/O formula will also work to increase a recipe.
